Description

1853 Cent in German Silver
Judd-150, PR65
On a Thick Planchet

1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-150 Thick, Pollock-178, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. This small cent pattern was struck on a thick planchet with a reeded edge in a German silver alloy. A regular quarter eagle obverse is paired with a wreath reverse that bears the denomination ONE CENT. Examples are also known on thin planchets. The German silver alloy was an early candidate to replace the copper large cent, but copper-nickel instead emerged triumphant. A sharply struck piece with refreshingly smooth surfaces and only a couple of pinpoint peripheral spots.
