    Description

1853 Pattern Cent in German Silver
    Judd-150, Thin Planchet, PR65
    Ex: Bass

1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-150 Thin, Pollock-178, Low R.7 PR65 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. A regular obverse quarter eagle die was paired with a wreath reverse that bears the denomination ONE CENT. This small cent pattern was struck with a reeded edge in a German silver alloy. The German silver alloy was a candidate to replace the large copper cent, but the 1856 Flying Eagle cent was instead issued in copper-nickel. The present brightly mirrored silver-gray Gem has a full strike and mark-free surfaces. The obverse displays a few tiny spots.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer, 5/1973; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1005; Houston Money Show Auction (Heritage, 12/2015), lot 3472, where it brought $4,230.
