    1853 Pattern Cent, Gem Proof
    Judd-150, Thin Planchet

1853 E1C One Cent, Thin Planchet, Judd-150, Pollock-178, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. This small cent pattern was struck with a reeded edge in a German silver alloy. A regular obverse quarter eagle die was paired with a wreath reverse that bears the denomination ONE CENT. The German silver alloy was a candidate to replace the large copper cent, but the 1856 Flying Eagle cent was instead issued in copper-nickel. The present coruscating silver-gray Gem has a full strike and mark-free surfaces. The obverse displays a few tiny spots.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer, 5/1973; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1005.
