Gem 1854 Cent Pattern--Double Struck, Second Strike Rotated on the Reverse--Judd-164
1854 1C Cent--Double Struck, Second Strike Rotated on Reverse--PR65 Brown NGC. Judd-164, Pollock-189, R.6. Flying eagle design with a hook-neck eagle on the obverse, surrounded by stars and the date below. The reverse closely resembles the regular dies issue for the Large cent. Struck in either copper or bronze with a plain edge. This is a very interesting pattern in that it is also an error--something that is unprecedented in our experience. It appears that the reverse was struck from a misaligned die. Because of the small number of patterns struck, the misalignment error was caught before being released. However, rather than discarding or melting the piece, it was reinserted into the anvil die and restruck with the hammer (reverse) die, properly positioned this time. Most of the evidence of the first strike was obliterated but traces of the lettering still can be seen in several places, most notably on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. ONE CENT also shows evidence of having been struck twice, and there is slight doubling on several of the leaves in the wreath. The surfaces are an even, medium brown coloration and glossy with no obvious or distracting marks. An unusual and very rare opportunity for the pattern or error specialist.
