    1854 Judd-159a Cent, MS61 Brown
    Seated Liberty Obverse

1854 E1C Electrotype One Cent, Judd-159a, Pollock-186, High R.6, MS61 Brown NGC. An unusual pattern variety. The obverse die was made by crudely reducing an 1854 silver dollar with a lathe, causing prominent concentric die lines and blurry design details. The date resembles 1851. The reverse shows 1 CENT encircled by an oak and acorn wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Judd-159 is a formidable rarity but its electrotype copper counterpart Judd-159a is somewhat more available. Designated as Mint State, but both NGC and PCGS have also certified examples as proof. Predominantly toned deep chocolate-brown, although crimson-red outlines the devices and legends. The well preserved obverse has blurry features and a faint target pattern (as made) on the seated Liberty. The lightly abraded reverse is comparatively sharp.
Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 11/2003), lot 11009.
