    1854 Cent in German Silver
    Judd-158, PR61

1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-158, Pollock-185, High R.6 PR61 PCGS. A curious cent pattern design. An 1854 Seated dollar obverse was subjected to a crude reducing lathe, creating a smaller obverse die with blurry device details and circular lathe lines. The pattern reverse features 1 CENT encircled by an oak and acorn wreath. Struck in German silver with a reeded edge. Both the Judd reference and state this particular alloy is composed of 40% nickel, 60% copper. However, we are unaware of any actual metallurgical tests that have been conducted to verify this. Like the Judd-159 below, this piece also has nearly effaced crossbar to the 4 in the date. Bright overall with good reflectivity in the fields. Lightly hairlined.
