    Description

    Experimental 1854 Cent Pattern
    Judd-158, PR64

    1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-158, Pollock-185, High R.6, PR64 NGC.
    Design.
Obverse: The regular Seated Liberty motif used on silver coins, with an arc of 13 stars around and the date below. Reverse: The denomination 1 CENT surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. Struck in nickel alloy with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
USPatterns.com observes, "The obverse design was crudely reduced from an 1854 silver dollar using the portrait lathe resulting in many semi-circular patterns appearing on it. The 4 in the date is very weak, so much so that these actually look like they are dated 1851 instead of 1854."

    Physical Description.
Due to the crude production technique, this issue lacks the customary brilliance and sharp detail of most proofs. The coin remains as struck, with no wear and few contact marks for the grade. Light blue and golden toning. NGC Census: 1 in 64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in 64, none finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Public Auction Sale (Stack's, 10/1988), lot 602.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 299X, PCGS# 11652)
