    Description

    1854 Cent Pattern in Copper
    Judd-159a, MS63 Brown

1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-159a, Pollock-186, High R.6, PR63 Brown NGC. An 1854 Seated dollar obverse was subjected to a crude reducing lathe, creating a smaller obverse die with blurry device details and circular lathe lines. The pattern reverse features 1 CENT encircled by an oak and acorn wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Light tan-brown patina has occasional hints of blue interspersed on each side. As usual, the reducing lathe diminished many details including the crossbar of the 4, causing the date to resemble 1851. Curiously, NGC thought so too; the result was an 1851 date on the insert. NGC has also designated the piece as a Judd-159 electrotype, equivalent to Judd-159a.
Ex: Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 9/1999), lot 1373.
