    1854 Cent Pattern, PR63 Brown
    Judd-159a, Copper Electrotype

1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-159a, Pollock-186, High R.6, PR63 Brown NGC. The obverse of an 1854 Seated dollar was rather carelessly reduced on a Contamin Portrait Lathe, resulting in blurry device details. The circular lines are most likely lines left over from machining the die body, the face not being properly polished by Mint workers prior to hubbing the die. The crossbar of the 4 in the date is notably weak, causing it to resemble 1851. The problem was in the Contamin lathe itself -- it was not good at reproducing images that had straight sides. The pattern reverse features 1 CENT encircled by an oak and acorn wreath. Judd-159a is a copper electrotype of the very rare Judd-159. The edge is plain with a "nice seam around the edge" per A satiny and unblemished deep walnut-brown specimen.
