Description

1854 Original Flying Eagle Cent in Bronze
Judd-164, PR64 Brown

1854 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-164 Original, Pollock-189, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. 92.13 grains. 96% copper, 3.2% tin, 1.1% zinc. The hook-necked flying eagle design is surrounded by stars and the date below. The reverse closely resembles the regular dies issue for the large cent, although the wreath and letters are smaller, as is the diameter. Struck in a bronze composition with a plain edge. Originals weigh between 90 and 100 grains, while restrikes weigh in around 113 grains. Struck 10-15% off center on the reverse, as sometimes seen. The surfaces exhibit deep, variegated reddish-brown and blue patina on each side. The fields display heavy die striations but little actual reflectivity. The obverse is pinpoint-sharp, but the reverse shows the usual softness on the wreath.
