    Description

    1854 No Stars Pattern Cent
    Judd-161, PR66 Brown

    1854 P1C One Cent, Judd-161, Pollock-187, R.4, PR66 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The design is similar to the current large cent in circulation, but there are no stars on the obverse, and the planchet is smaller--just about 25.4 mm (1 inch), compared with a diameter for the large cent of 27.5 mm (1.08 inches). Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
While the measurements above do not seem to be a dramatic difference, it is one that is immediately noticeable. The corresponding weights, of course, differ as well. Originals and restrikes are known. The originals, per Pollock, weigh in the neighborhood of 91 to 100 grains (5.9 to 6.5 gm), while the restrikes weigh around 113-114 grains (7.3-7.4 gm). By way of comparison, a standard 1854 large cent would weigh 10.9 gm when new. NGC has not given an indication which this is.

    Physical Description.
This is a splendid, deeply mirrored proof. Each side shows glimmering iridescent blue patina with noticeable amounts of original red that still remain. USPatterns.com notes that these are difficult to find with much red color. NGC Census: 3 in PR66 Brown, none finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR66 Brown, 2 finer in PR66 Red and Brown (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Lester Merkin (6/1972).
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
