    Description

    1854 Cent Pattern in Bronze
    Judd-161 Restrike, PR64 Brown

1854 P1C One Cent, Judd-161 Restrike, Pollock-187, R.4, PR64 Brown PCGS. 95.52 grains. The smaller-size large cent design has no stars on the obverse, the reverse has two leaves under the E in STATES. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. It is exceptionally difficult to determine if these pieces are copper or bronze without metallurgical analysis. Pollock reports dozens of weights that vary from 90.9 to 100 grains. Outliers include two pieces that weighed 113.4 and 113.9 grains. This is a lovely brown example with just a hint of underlying red. The strike is a bit soft in the centers, but there are no obvious or detracting contact marks. While labeled as a Restrike, there is no evidence of the die rust seen on some later restrikes.
