1855 Flying Eagle Cent in Copper or Bronze
Judd-168, PR63 Red and Brown

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193, R.4, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upward, similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design for the Gobrecht dollars (and soon the Flying Eagle cents). The date 1855 is below with slanted 5s, and the reverse is similar to the large cent. The planchet is slightly smaller than the large cent, obviously a transitional pattern between the "old coppers" and small cents that were first struck in 1856. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Very scarce with any of the original red color remaining, this piece shows a significant amount around the outer margins with emerald-green surfaces otherwise and nice reflectivity in the fields. Identifiable by a large planchet flaw in the field above the N in ONE.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2004), lot 6417; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1981.
