1855 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern, Judd-171a
Struck in German Silver, PR62
Possibly Unique Metallurgical Composition

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-171a, Pollock-196, R.8, PR62 NGC. An eagle flying left dominates the obverse, 13 stars are arranged around the periphery, the date 1855 is below. On the reverse, the denomination ONE CENT is centered within a laurel wreath, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the border. Struck in German silver with a plain edge. This piece is similar in composition and weight to the Judd-171a we offered in our October Dallas Auction. The weight of this piece is 116.9 grains, and the composition is 67% copper, 19% nickel, and 14% zinc. The coin in our Dallas Sale was 68/17/15. Like that coin, this one is also softly struck (undoubtedly because of the high nickel content), and there is evidence of die clashing on each side. The surfaces have the appearance of a 1860-1864 copper-nickel cent whose original color has not diminished. The fields are remarkably deep in their reflectivity, especially given the hardness of the nickel alloy. A pair of vertical, dark-colored planchet laminations in the center of the obverse uniquely identify this particular pattern.
