    Description

    1856 Half Cent in Copper-Nickel
    Judd-177, PR64

1856 E1/2C Half Cent, Judd-177, Pollock-205, R.5, PR64 NGC. Regular dies trial striking for the half cent. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. These pieces were an important metallurgical trial striking that tested the proposed alloy for the Flying Eagle cents which were struck later in this same year. This is one of only two pattern half cents; an honor shared with Judd-155. The obverse displays much reddish patina while the reverse is several shades lighter and looks more like a copper-nickel strike. Well, but not fully struck.
