Description
1856 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern, Judd-184, PR64
Snow-PT1, A Flashy Coin
1856 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-184, Pollock-220, Low R.7 PR64
PCGS. Snow-PT1. The obverse was struck from the normal 1856
Flying Eagle cent dies, showing a flying eagle in a plain field
with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date below. The
obverse is the Type of 1856, showing a squared-off inside to the O
in OF. The reverse exhibits an oak wreath with ornamental shield
above and the denomination ONE CENT in the center -- a design
vaguely presaging the regular-issue reverse with shield and oak
wreath of the 1860-1909 Indian cents. Struck in copper-nickel with
a plain edge.On this die pair, the U in UNITED shows a point at the bottom. The reverse die (Snow's Reverse C) shows the arrow feathers fused/connected; they are separate/polished on the Snow-PT1 reverse (Reverse A, paired with the same obverse). Rick Snow comments on the pairing of an 1856 obverse and an 1858 reverse:
"One die, Rev. A, is found only on this die pair, and the second die, Rev. C, is found on the pieces struck for the 12-piece pattern sets. This is significant because examples with Rev. C can be die-linked to the 12-piece pattern sets of 1858. The other die is paired with an earlier die state obverse. These two die pairings could have been struck the same day, or years apart. It is uncertain if any of these were struck in 1856, but if any were, it would be the ones struck with Rev. A."
Snow estimates that no more than 25 pieces were struck of this pattern or fantasy piece. This is a fine and flashy example, displaying much medium orange color with golden-brown device high points. An extremely eye-appealing coin. Population: 4 in 64 (1 in 64+), 2 finer (1/16).
