    Description

    1857 Cent Pattern in Copper-Nickel
    Judd-186, PR64

1857 E1C One Cent, Judd-186, Pollock-222, High R.7, PR64 NGC. The obverse depiction of Liberty is the same as on the 1865 three cent nickel, but stars replace the peripheral legend. The reverse features the denomination within a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA does not appear on this very rare pattern. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The obverse die was also used to produced a quarter eagle pattern, Judd-189. The reverse die was earlier used on an 1853 pattern cent. Smooth, satiny surfaces exhibit a blend of olive-gold and chestnut patina, without any significant contact marks. The peripheral stars and central devices are sharp. A bit of greenish verdigris tucked into the C in CENT serves as a pedigree marker.
