    Description

    Gem Proof 1857 Cent Pattern
    Judd-186, Liberty Obverse

1857 E1C One Cent, Judd-186, Pollock-222, High R.7, PR65 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. The obverse depiction of Liberty is the same as on the 1865 three cent nickel, but stars replace the peripheral legend. The reverse features the denomination within a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA does not appear on this very rare pattern. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The obverse die was also used to produced a quarter eagle pattern, J-189. The reverse die was earlier used on an 1853 pattern cent. The attractive caramel-gold surfaces are nicely mirrored and display only minor obverse carbon. The die rotation is close to metal turn. Housed in an old green label holder.
Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 7/2004), lot 7891. (PCGS# 11815)
