Description
1858 Transitional Flying Eagle Cent
Judd-191, Pollock-233, PR65 Cameo
1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-191, Pollock-233, R.5, PR65
Cameo NGC. The obverse is the regular Flying Eagle cent of
1858, but the reverse is that of 1859, the Laurel Wreath reverse,
rather than the heavier wreath of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco
that appears on the 1858 regular issue. Struck in copper-nickel
with a plain edge. This pattern issue was struck in two types, both
lumped together in Judd as number 191, but given separate numbers
in Andrew W. Pollock III's United States Patterns and Related
Issues. Pollock-233 (as here) shows five-leaf clusters on the
reverse, while Pollock-234, considerably rarer, shows clusters of
six leaves. This pretty Gem Cameo coin displays well-struck, distraction-free pinkish-tan surfaces on each side, with excellent eye appeal and noticeable field-device contrast. Like so many pieces in this remarkable collection, the piece was obviously purchased with an eye toward quality. Census: 7 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (3/09).
