PR64 1858 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern, Judd-202
1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-202, Pollock-245, R.5, PR64 NGC. This rare pattern has much the same designs as on a regular-issue Flying Eagle cent, but on the obverse a "skinny" (per Judd) eagle flies, the style that Mint Director James R. Snowden called "a small eagle, volant [heraldry: 'with the wings extended, as in flying'], presented in a different position from that on the legal cent." This variety shows five leaf clusters in the reverse wreath, identifying it as Pollock-245, while the rarer six-leaf clusters mark the Pollock-246 variant. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The obverse eagle is reminiscent of some of Christian Gobrecht's modifications of the early designs of artist Titian Peale for the reverse of the Gobrecht dollars, which were of course resurrected 20 years later for the obverse of the Flying Eagle cents. This piece--a historic pattern from the early days of the small cents and the birth of real American numismatic interest in early copper--shows tan-gold surfaces that display deeper brown patches in numerous areas.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29BH, PCGS# 11867)
