    1858 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern
    Judd-203, PR55
    Obverse Lamination

1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-203, Pollock-247, R.5 -- Obverse Lamination -- PR55 NGC. The obverse shows a hooked-neck eagle flying left with tall wings. The reverse is similar to that of the issued 1860 cent but there is no shield at 12 o'clock. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. NGC has classed this as an error, but it is actually a pattern struck on a defective planchet -- not technically an error in our opinion. The lamination is definitely noticeable, though; located at 10 o'clock on the obverse and another, smaller segment in the center of that side. Numerous signs of light contact are peppered throughout, and the surfaces show light reddish-tinted patina.
