Description

    1858 Centered Date Indian Cent
    Judd-211, Pollock-262, PR64

    1858 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-211, Pollock-262, R.5, PR64 NGC.
    Design.
The regular-issue Indian Head obverse is here combined with the Laurel Wreath reverse. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Die varieties exist: Low Date (Pollock-255, R.7) and Centered Date (Pollock-262, R.4 in Pollock; now listed as R.5 on USPatterns.com). The rarer Low Date is really quite easy to distinguish, as the lower right loop of the last 8 in the date is extremely close to the denticles.

    Physical Description.
Centered Date. A few trivial flyspecks appear, mostly visible under a loupe, but a sharp strike and contact-free pinkish-tan surfaces provide generous eye appeal. NGC Census: 18 in PR64; 7 finer. PCGS Population: 22 in PR64; 6 finer including a PR64 Cameo (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
    (NGC ID# 29BT, PCGS# 11893)
