    1858 Centered Date Indian Cent
    Struck in Copper-Nickel
    Judd-212, Pollock-263, PR63

    1858 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-212, Pollock-263, R.5, PR63 NGC.
    Design.
The Indian Head obverse combined with the Oak Wreath, With Shield reverse, featuring an ornamented shield. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Die varieties exist: Low Date (Pollock-256, R.7) and Centered Date (Pollock-263, R.5). The rarer Low Date (of which USPatterns.com estimates a half-dozen examples exist) is really quite easy to distinguish: The bottom left serif of the 1 and the lower right loop of the last 8 in the date are close to the denticles.

    Physical Description.
Centered Date. A sharply struck piece that shows some minor haze in the fields and a small, island-shaped planchet lamination near O(F), mentioned for pedigree purposes. Seemingly conservatively graded, and quite attractive despite the modest Select rating. Streaky tan surfaces. NGC Census: 15 in PR63, 32 finer. PCGS Population: 25 in PR63, 49 finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: The S.S. Forrest, Jr. Collection (Stack's, 9/1972), lot 647.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
    (NGC ID# 29BU, PCGS# 11895)
