1859 Paquet Pattern Half-Dollar in Silver

1859 Half-Dollar, Judd-235, Pollock-284, R.5, PR 63 PCGS. Designed by Anthony Paquet, the obverse depicts Liberty seated facing left, supporting a fasces with her right hand and a shield with her left. There are thirteen stars around and the date below. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast holds an olive sprig and three slender arrows in its claws. On this variety, the eagle's beak is broken and the left wingtip is rounded. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. A few minor hairlines are noticed in the highly reflective fields. A peripheral circle of russet patina has developed over the years on each side.
