Description
1859 Half Dollar in Silver
Judd-235, PR63
Vibrant Multicolor Toning
1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-235, Pollock-284, R.5, PR63
PCGS. The obverse design features a left-facing Liberty,
seated, supporting a fasces with her right hand and a shield with
her left. Thirteen small stars surround the periphery with the
date, 1859, in exergue. Arrows and olive branches lie at the base
of the shield. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The "broken
ribbon" Pollock subvariety, named after the interrupted right
ribbon end. USPatterns.com also notes that Pollock-284 has
three-line vertical stripes on the eagle's shield, while
Pollock-282 instead has four-line vertical shield stripes. The
wingtips also differ. The dies are credited to Anthony C. Paquet,
as they correspond to his style of tall, narrow letters within the
legends. A splendidly toned specimen with aquamarine margins and
plum-purple centers. The reverse shows glimpses of golden-brown
patina.From The LS Collection.
