1859 Half Dollar in Silver, PR66
Judd-245, Pollock-301 (Perfect Ribbon)
1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-245, Pollock-301, High R.6, PR66
NGC. The obverse features the so-called "French Head" of
Liberty facing right. In fact, the profile was almost certainly
modeled after the Apollo Belvedere statue in Rome. A large eagle
with a heraldic shield dominates the reverse. The eagle clutches a
ribbon in its beak, and the claws grasp an olive branch and three
long arrows. The "Perfect Ribbon" subvariety is characterized by
four vertical lines in the shield, seven tail feathers, pointed
left (observer's right) wingtip, and full leaf above the A in HALF.
Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Irregular patches of deep blue
and reddish patina are scattered over each side with moderate
