    Eye-Appealing 1859 Fifty Cent
    Struck in Silver, PR64
    Judd-245, Pollock-303, R.7

    1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-245, Pollock-303, R.7, PR64 NGC.
    Design.
Referred to as Longacre's "French Liberty Head" design. A Romanesque bust of Liberty faces right, with a crown of intertwined oak and vine leaves. Around her neck is a scroll inscribed with the word LIBERTY. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA fills the peripheral fields with the date below. Reverse: Paquet's Perched Eagle design with a broken ribbon held in the eagle's beak. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The ninth edition of United States Pattern Coins by Judd groups the perfect ribbon and broken ribbon varieties, Pollock-301 and Pollock-303, respectively, under Judd-245. Both variations are rare. The USPatterns.com website comments of the current variety: "The 'broken ribbon' reverse die shows extensive die rust ... and is likely a restrike made in the 1870s. Over a half dozen combined are known in both silver and copper."

    Physical Description.
Deep gunmetal-gray patination hosts variegated magenta and electric-blue toning on both sides of this pleasing near-Gem. Strike weakness is observed on the reverse and is actually an artifact of the die setup; the design was too deep to fill completely with the selected planchets. Pollock (1994) documented a weight of 192.1 grains with a diameter of 1.199 inches for the current offering. NGC Census: 2 in PR64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 4 in PR64, none finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Auction '89 (David Akers, 7/1989), lot 1220.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29CS, PCGS# 11988)
