    Description

Anthony Paquet's 1859 Seated Liberty Half
    Judd-248, PR65 Brown

1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-248, Pollock-287, High R.7, PR65 Brown NGC. The Paquet Liberty Seated With Fasces obverse. A homely, disproportionate Liberty is seated on a rock, shield at her lowered right (facing) hand and holding the top of a fasces in her left hand. An olive branch and three arrowheads lie -- curiously so -- under the shield. Thirteen stars encircle the rim. The reverse is the familiar Cereal Wreath design, with denomination HALF DOLLAR in the center. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com opines that these pieces, of which less than a half dozen exist, were "struck from rusted dies in the 1860s or 1870s."
While evenly patinated, the fields still show remarkable depth of reflectivity. Both sides are primarily brown and lilac with slight bits of original red still evident, especially on the reverse. Well struck. Each side shows a few scattered carbon spots.
Ex: Stack's private treaty; Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two, FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1578.
