    1859 Gold Dollar in Copper
    Judd-256, PR63 Brown

1859 PG$1 Judd-256, Pollock-7010, Low R.7, PR63 Brown PCGS. The obverse is similar to that used on the regular issue 1859 gold dollar, but the letters are slightly taller. The reverse is also similar to the regular issue, but the letters in DOLLAR are taller. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. There is considerable debate surrounding the origin of this pattern. Pollock notes that the dies are similar to those created by Anthony Paquet for the 1858 pattern gold dollar (Judd-224 and 225), but the style is different and in lower relief. As such, many scholars believe that this pattern was produced outside the U.S. Mint for sale to collectors. According to USPatterns.com, an example was listed as lot 2974 in Woodward's March 1865 Bache I sale. Gold, violet, and apple-green colors invigorate the seemingly unabraded surfaces. The wreath has tiny spots at 4 and 11 o'clock, with another small spot near Liberty's chin.
    Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2004), lot 10600. (NGC ID# 29D3, PCGS# 12020)

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
