1860 Lettered Edge Half Dollar Pattern
    Judd-269, R.8, Three Known
    MS60 Brown

    1860 E50C Half Dollar, Judd-269, Pollock-317, R.8, MS60 Brown NGC.
    Design.
These are regular-issue Liberty Seated half dollars dated 1860 but they are defaced, and each displays the "edge lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM, but with the letters not strongly impressed," according to Judd. Struck in copper with a lettered edge (of course).

    Commentary.
Another experiment with edge lettering, apparently a short-lived one. While Judd (2005) comments that all of the three known examples show edge lettering "not strongly impressed," Pollock writes (1994) that only the Farouk piece "shows evidence of lettering."

    Physical Description.
Edge lettering on this piece is extremely faint. The most obvious presence on the edge are the stars at 6 and 12 o'clock. Each side has four long indents, an obvious attempt at defacement. The effects of these cancellation marks carry through to the other side, giving the coin a slightly bulged area opposite each mark. The coin is graded MS60, but this is clearly a net grade because of the cancellation, as the surfaces otherwise are remarkably free from post-striking impairments. The color designation is listed as Brown, but again this seems conservative to us, as there is considerable underlying red on each side.

    Provenance.
Ex: Maj. Lenox R. Lohr; Cox Collection (Stack's, 4/1962), lot 2206; Boosel (RARCOA, 4/1972), lot 1019, Uncirculated; 1974 FUN (RARCOA, 1/1974), lot 554; ANA (Steve Ivy, 2/1983), lot 3026, Uncirculated; Stack's (3/1985), lot 576, Uncirculated.
