    1860 Half Dollar, Cancellation Marks
    Judd-269, XF Details
    Ex: Lemus

1860 E50C Half Dollar, Judd-269, Pollock-317, R.8 -- Scratched, Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. XF Details. Ex: Lemus. These are regular-issue Liberty Seated half dollars dated 1860 but they are defaced, and each displays the "edge lettered E PLURIBUS UNUM, but with the letters not strongly impressed," according to Judd. Struck in copper with a lettered edge (of course). This experiment with edge lettering was apparently a short-lived one. While Judd comments that all of the three known examples show edge lettering "not strongly impressed," Pollock writes that only the Farouk piece "shows evidence of lettering." The edge lettering on this piece is faint. Each side has several long indents, an obvious attempt at defacement. The effects of these cancellation marks carry through to the other side, giving the coin a slightly bulged area opposite each mark. The coin is net graded XF Details, not only because of the cancellation marks (that NCS calls "Scratched") but also from the heavy cleaning and subsequent bright red color.
