    Gilt 1860 Five Dollar, Judd-272, PR63

1860 P$5 Five Dollar, Judd-272, Pollock-320, Low R.6, PR63 Gilt NGC. Ex: Bass. Thin planchet. 65.2 grains. The obverse introduces the right facing bust of Liberty with three large stars on her cap, a motif familiar to Standard Silver collectors but first used on Judd-271 and Judd-272. The date is quite small. The reverse features an eagle with raised wing, carrying the banner E PLURIBUS UNUM with its beak and clutching arrows and an olive branch within its claws. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, later gilt, probably outside the Mint. Identical to Judd-283 except for the change in date. This pattern was for a large diameter, thin planchet half eagle, designed to keep unethical individuals from hollowing out gold coins and replacing their content with a less valuable metal. The thicker planchet variant of this pattern varies in weight from 120 to 140 grains. This piece is identifiable as the DiBello-Bass example (Bass owned three of these gilt pieces) by two small contact marks, one in the reverse field below the TE of UNITED and another above the second L in DOLLAR. The gilt is intact throughout and the only mentionable defect is a haziness in the right obverse field that extends on to Liberty's face.
Ex: Gaston DiBello (Stack's, 5/1970), lot 484; Bass I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1350; American Numismatic Rarities, 8/2006), lot 923.
