    1861 Copper Five Dollar Pattern
    Judd-283, PR63 Brown

    1861 P$5 Five Dollar, Judd-283, Pollock-336, Low R.7, PR63 Brown PCGS. The obverse depicts a bust of Liberty facing right with thirteen stars arranged around the periphery. Liberty wears a cap ornamented with three stars, over her right shoulder is a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date 1861 is at the bottom. An eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its chest dominates the reverse. The eagle grasps a scroll inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS are arranged around the border. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Mellowed red luster surrounds the devices with reddish-brown obverse fields and rich olive reverse fields. One obverse spot prevents an even higher grade.
