Description
PR64 Brown Judd-283 Copper
1861 Half Eagle Pattern
1861 P$5 Five Dollar, Judd-283, Pollock-336, Low R.7, PR64 Brown
PCGS. The obverse depicts a bust of Liberty facing right with
thirteen stars arranged around the periphery. Liberty wears a cap
ornamented with three stars, over her right shoulder is a ribbon
inscribed LIBERTY. The date 1861 is at the bottom. An eagle with
outstretched wings and a shield on its chest dominates the reverse.
The eagle grasps a scroll inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak,
the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE
DOLLARS are arranged around the border. Struck in copper with a
reeded edge. Richly patinated cherry-red, lilac, peach-gold, and
sea-green. The strike is needle-sharp and a lens reveals only minor
field imperfections. Though Judd-283 is designated as Low R.7, a
combined total of just five pieces is certified by NGC and PCGS.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29DT, PCGS# 12118, Greysheet# 12464)
