Elusive Pattern 1861 Five Dollar, Judd-283

1861 P$5 Five Dollar, Judd-283, Pollock-336, R.6-7, PR 62 Brown PCGS. The obverse depicts a bust of Liberty facing right with thirteen stars arranged around the periphery. Liberty wears a cap ornamented with three stars, over her right shoulder is a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date 1861 is at the bottom. An eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its chest dominates the reverse. The eagle grasps a scroll inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS are arranged around the border. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This is a pleasing representative of this scarce and seldom offered pattern. Both sides display mottled olive-brown and chocolate-brown shades. A sharply impressed coin, the surfaces are also remarkably distraction-free for the grade.
