1861 Motto Half Dollar in Copper
Judd-278, PR65 Brown

1861 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-278, Pollock-327, Low R.7, PR65 Brown NGC. The design is similar to the regular-issue Seated half dollar, but the motto GOD OUR TRUST is placed on a scroll above the eagle. Struck in copper and bronzed with a reeded edge. Fewer than a dozen examples are believed known of both silver and copper strikings of the two date variants of this experimental motto half dollar. Two different obverse dies were used with slightly different date placements. This piece is an example of the Date Left variant with the shield point aligned with the right side of 1 in the date. While labeled Brown, there is a significant presence of original mint red on the obverse, while the reverse shows deeper blue patina. An exceptionally attractive example of this scarce variant of the With Motto concept. Census: 6 in 65 Brown, 0 finer (12/25).
Ex: The Collection of William Rau/Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2018), lot 4934.
