Description

1861 GOD OUR TRUST Half Dollar
Judd-280, PR66 Brown

1861 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-280, Pollock-331, Low R.7, PR66 Brown NGC.
Design.
The obverse and reverse are the regular Seated Liberty half dollar dies of the year, with GOD OUR TRUST added in the reverse field, no scroll. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
The Library Company of Philadelphia has an undated letter from Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre concerning the directive to put a reference to trust in God on U.S. coinage. The original suggestion was OUR TRUST IS IN GOD, but no patterns are known with that inscription; Longacre apparently edited it to GOD OUR TRUST. He further, understandably, chose to implement the motto only on the four largest-size coins, the double eagle, eagle, silver dollar, and half dollar. The letter is quoted on USPatterns.com under Judd-279 and 280.

Physical Description.
A magnificent example. The surfaces actually retain a significant amount of original red, mostly around the devices, but overall the coin has mellowed to lovely iridescent brown, blue, and red. The striking definition is intricately detailed on each side, and there are no obvious contact marks (nor should one expect them on a PR66). NGC Census: 2 in PR66 Brown, none finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR66 Brown, 1 finer as a PR66 Red and Brown (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's (12/1987), lot 1018.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
