    Description

High Date 1862 Eagle, Bronzed Copper
    Judd-297, Pollock-356, PR65 Brown

    1862 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-297, Pollock-356, Low R.6, PR65 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The regular 1862 eagle dies, with the added GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll on the reverse. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
The Judd ninth edition notes that this pattern is usually found with bronzed surfaces. Like the similar 1861 patterns, Low and High Date variants exist. USPatterns.com notes that the High Date, as here, with about a half-dozen examples known, is twice as rare as the Low Date, of which maybe a dozen survive. The Low R.6 rarity ranking is for Judd-297, both varieties combined.

    Physical Description.
High Date, Pollock-356. Designated "Bronzed $10" as well as PR65 Brown by NGC. The Brown designation may be somewhat misleading, as there is a significant amount of underlying red that still shows through the thin overlay of brown-blue patina. A high-end example of this popular pattern and one that has no mentionable contact marks or carbon spots. NGC Census: This is the finer of the two pieces graded by NGC as bronzed. PCGS Population: None as bronzed (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: The T. Henry Allen Collection (Stack's, 2/1977), lot 1143.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
