Description

    Beautiful Bronzed Copper 1863 Eagle Pattern
    GOD OUR TRUST, Judd-352, PR66 Brown;
    Tied for Finest Certified

    1863 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-352, Pollock-424, High R.6, PR66 Brown NGC.
    Design.
    Similar to the adopted design for the ten dollar Liberty, with the addition of the motto GOD OUR TRUST directly onto the field above the eagle's head. The obverse is the identical die used to coin 1863 proof gold eagles. Struck in bronzed copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
    Today the Judd-352 eagle pattern is considered High R.6, with only about 13 to 16 pieces known. The rarity rating for the variety has been quoted at several different levels over the years. In Adams-Woodin, the R.3 level suggested that 101 to 300 pieces existed. In Judd, the R.3 level meant that 201 to 500 still existed. Pollock rated this variety R.6, or 13 to 30 pieces. Today the rarity has been adjusted to a higher level, partly on a contemporary note that George Eckfeldt wrote in his diary: "Nov. 17th, 1863. Struck 20 sets of copper 10 dollar pieces 'God is our Trust.'"

    Physical Description.
    Incredible mahogany surfaces with matte or satiny luster. Considered a proof, although the bronzed copper finish prevents a mirrored appearance. The reverse is rotated about 20 degrees clockwise, netting a die alignment of about 200 degrees. The devices are exceptionally full and the surfaces are essentially free of blemishes, other than a few minuscule spots. Although NGC has certified an even half-dozen examples of the bronzed and unbronzed variants of the issue, the present specimen is the numerically finest graded among them. The finest at PCGS are two PR66 Brown examples, although it does not single out the bronzed pieces (11/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Major Lenox R. Lohr; Empire Coin Company (1961); Connecticut Collection; Bowers and Merena (6/1991), lot 1142.
