    Description

1863 Postage Currency Ten Cents in Silver
    Judd-325, PR64, 2.6% Iron Alloy
    Second Possible Presentation Piece

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-325, Pollock-390, Cassel-25, R.8, PR64 PCGS. 20.17 grains. Ex: Bass. The standard Postage Currency obverse and reverse designs, but this lightweight example is struck in an unusual alloy of 94.5% silver, 2.9% copper, and 2.6% iron, with a plain edge, as verified by SEM-EDX testing conducted by QC Metallurgical on certificate number 60482.64/5501080. Only two 20-grain patterns were presented to Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase -- who requested they be struck -- and then rejected them. This is believed to be the second of the two lightweight pieces struck for presentation for him. What is most curious is the 2.6% iron alloy. According to series specialist David Cassel: "This coin was produced to test if some iron replacing an equal amount of copper would strengthen this thin, fragile coin. This is the only tested silver J-325 coin that has iron." Each side is richly toned in shades of golden-rose and sky-blue with strong underlying mirrors. Numerous lint marks were struck into the surfaces, especially the reverse.
Ex: Numismatics, Ltd. to Harry Bass (8/12/1974); Bass I (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1080; to David Cassel.
