    Description

1863 Postage Currency Pattern, 97.28% Silver
    Judd-325, Richly Toned PR64

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-325, Pollock-390, Cassel-58, Low R.6, PR64 PCGS. 22.2 grains. This is the standard Postage Currency design. Here it is struck in 97.28% silver and 2.72% copper, with a plain edge, as verified by SEM-EDX testing by QC Metallurgical on certificate number 60482.64/21873034. According to the Chapman brothers in their 1903 Eavenson Collection, the Mint struck 43 Postage Currency patterns in May 1863. These are the most frequently encountered pieces in the Postage Currency series and most often used for type purposes. This example displays rich olive and rose toning over each side with remarkably deep mirrors that enliven the patina when the piece is rotated beneath a light.

Ten Postage Currency patterns were presented to Salmon P. Chase in 1863, and all were in original wrappers until recently. The original wrappers are now thought to be lost, but photos of them survive. It is possible to see diagnostic markings and correlate the coin with the photo taken of these presentation pieces. This example is one of the 22-grain presentation pieces, provable by comparison to these photographs (the photo negatives were originally owned by Milton Friedberg and later given to David Cassel). These photos of the wrappers and coins are reproduced on three pages in the first edition and three pages in the second edition of Cassel's Postage Currency references.
