Description

    Rare 1863 Ten Cents, Judd-325, Pollock-390, Low R.6, PR63

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-325, Pollock-390, Low R.6, PR63 PCGS. The obverse depicts an ornamental shield with an inverted laurel wreath suspended from a ring. A pair of crossed arrows is behind the shield, with EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES around the perimeter. The reverse has 10 CENTS 1863 in the center, with * POSTAGE CURRENCY * ACT JULY 1862 around. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Richly and originally toned, both sides display a base of dove-gray toning over which mottled copper-russet shadings have developed. The surfaces, while a little subdued by the patination, are free of noticeable handling marks. There are, however, several interesting mint-made features (as struck) that should help trace the pedigree of this rare and important example. The most important are a die crack from the upper rim to the tip of the ring, on the obverse, and a faint lint mark on the reverse, out from the right side of the 0 in 10. (NGC ID# 29F5, PCGS# 60482)

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
