    Description

1863 Postage Currency Ten Cents Pattern
    PR65 Red and Brown
    Judd-326, Pure Copper Striking
    Only Two Examples Privately Owned

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326, Pollock-395, Cassel-13, R.8, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. 36.0 grains. This is the standard Postage Currency design. The Judd-326 is struck in pure copper and has a reeded edge. Previously believed to be struck in billon (copper and silver). Only three other examples are known of this pattern. The others are in the Byron Reed Collection in Omaha, Connecticut State Library, and the 35-grain Bass Collection (offered by us in our August 2014 ANA sale). These pieces have tested as either pure copper (in the case of this piece) or nearly pure copper with negligible amounts of iron and lead (in the case of the Byron Reed piece). It appears only two heavy (35-36-grain) pieces are known. S&N Labs tested this piece in 1997 (while it was still in a PCGS holder) and its certificate number 04646243 stated it was 100% copper. This may well be the only pure copper example known in this heavier weight subset for the Judd-326. The fields are bright and shine forcefully through the blue-yellow patina that is intermixed with original red.
