1863 Ten Cents in Copper, PR64 Brown
Judd-326, A Fresh Example
1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326, Pollock-395, R.7, PR64 Brown
PCGS. The obverse bears a central shield with intersecting
arrows behind and a ring atop, from which depends an inverted
laurel wreath framing the shield left and right. EXCHANGED FOR /
U.S. NOTES occupies the periphery. The reverse shows two rosettes
separating POSTAGE CURRENCY and ACT JULY 1862, with 10 CENTS 1863
on three lines in the center. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Medal die alignment. The number of surviving pieces in copper with
a reeded edge has not been precisely nailed down. Five are
confirmed, but USPatterns.com lists as many as seven possibly
extant. This piece is a new addition to the roster, not previously
documented at auction. Copper-green and russet obverse toning
contrasts with red-violet on the reverse, while both sides turn
chestnut-brown when tiled away from a light. A few carbon specks on
the obverse serve as pedigree markers.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 60484, Greysheet# 12516)
