    1863 Postage Currency Pattern, PR65
Judd-326A, Billon With a Trace of Iron
    Ex: Bass

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326A, Pollock-394, Cassel-27, High R.6, PR65 PCGS. 24.5 grains. Ex: Bass. The obverse features the heraldic shield with arrows, surrounded by an inverted laurel wreath, with the inscription EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES around. The reverse shows the denomination 10 CENTS in two lines above the date, with the inscriptions POSTAGE CURRENCY and ACT JULY 1862 around. Struck in billon with a plain edge. This piece was originally thought to have a tin / copper alloy, and it was attributed as a Judd-330. However, SEM-EDX metallurgical testing conducted by QC Metallurgical on certificate number 60485.65/5500638 showed the composition to be 76% copper, 20.2% silver, and 3.2% iron. It was then correctly attributed as a Judd-326a as this is a billon composition. This example may well be the only Judd-326a with iron in the coin's alloy. The billon composition gives the coin an unusual hybrid appearance. It certainly doesn't look like silver, nor does it have a confirmed copper appearance. We have to wonder if these billon pieces may have had a more silvery appearance 152 years ago, enough that they would have been accepted in the channels of commerce. The surfaces are toned moss green with occasional hints of rose. The fields are brightly reflective and the strike details are complete throughout. A few tiny spots can be made out on the obverse, many more are seen on the reverse.
