    Description

Gem 1863 Ten Cents Postal Currency Judd-326A

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326A, Pollock-394, High R.6, PR65 NGC. U.S. coins were hoarded during the Civil War, and this pattern was part of an effort to replenish small change, a problem eventually resolved with fractional currency. The obverse has an ornamental shield with an inverted laurel wreath suspended from a ring, and a pair of crossed arrows is behind the shield. The peripheral legend reads EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES. The reverse has 10 CENTS 1863 in the center and * POSTAGE CURRENCY * ACT JULY 1862 around the margin. Struck with a plain edge in a billion copper-silver alloy. Deep blended forest-green and tan colors consume the fields, while glimpses of the original crimson color outline the obverse letters. A well preserved and fully struck Gem. For pedigree purposes, trivial ticks are noted on the LY in JULY.(#60485)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29F8, PCGS# 60485)
