1863 Postage Currency Aluminum Pattern
Judd-327, Plain Edge Striking, PR66

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-328 (misattributed), Pollock-398, Cassel-20, High R.6, PR66 PCGS. 8.2 grains. The obverse features the usual heraldic shield with arrows, surrounded by an inverted laurel wreath, with the inscription EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES around. The reverse shows the denomination 10 CENTS in two lines above the date, with the inscriptions POSTAGE CURRENCY and ACT JULY 1862 around. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The percentage of aluminum in this alloy, as determined by S&N Labs on certificate number 60487.66/2679413, was very high at 96%, followed by 2.2% iron, and 1.6% silicon. This is an extraordinarily well-preserved pattern. The aluminum shows no signs of oxidation, and there is just the slightest hint of pale golden toning present on each side. This piece is misattributed as a Judd-328 (reeded edge). It is actually a Judd-327 (plain edge). Actually, this piece is even misattributed as a Judd-327. In earlier editions of Judd, the Judd-327 listing included aluminum Postage Currency versions in both 8 grains and pure aluminum. However, no pure aluminum pieces have been located. Judd-328 pieces weighed 11 grains, had a reeded edge, and 3% copper combined with 97% aluminum. To better cope with these impossible combinations, beginning with the eighth edition, Judd-327 encompassed all the plain edge versions; Judd-328 covered all the reeded edge pieces, and the 8 and 11 grain weights were ignored. Considering the variants of weight, purity, and edge, there eight possible combinations for just two Judd numbers: Judd-327 and Judd-328.
