    Description

    1863 Indian Cent, PR64 Brown
    Judd-299, Thin Planchet

1863 1C One Cent, Judd-299, Pollock-359, Snow-PT1a, R.3, PR64 Brown NGC. A transitional pattern struck from regular issue plain edge 1863 Indian cent dies, but in bronze instead of copper-nickel. The prevalence of copper Civil War tokens, and the absence of Indian cents from commerce, convinced the Mint to change the alloy. Although undesignated as such on the holder, this is the usually encountered thin planchet and medal turn variant. The fully struck and prominently mirrored surfaces exhibit attractive apple-green, peach-gold, and lilac-red undertones. The rim shows depressions near 9 o'clock on the obverse, and incused letters opposite at 3 o'clock on the reverse.
