    Description

    1863 With Motto Quarter Pattern
Struck in Silver, Judd-335, Proof Details

1863 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-335, Pollock-407, High R.7 -- Bent -- NGC Details. Proof. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The obverse is similar to the regular-issue Seated quarter of the year. The reverse is also similar in design but bears the With Motto motif on a scroll, as adopted officially in 1866. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This piece is largely brilliant, lustrous, and attractive with a hint of gold toning, but the obverse is noticeably convex and the reverse concave, even though no obvious damage appears otherwise. This is quite a curiosity, one for which we have no ready answer. Only a few stray hairlines are in evidence, and a curved lintmark appears above Liberty's head. These so-called "transitional" half dollars are actually fantasy restrikes, struck sometime after 1866.
Ex: Numismatics, Ltd., August 12, 1974, from an unspecified trade; Harry W. Bass Research Foundation. Accompanied by an inventory tag showing provenance. HBCC-6052 (Bass Sylloge number).
