1863 2C Two Cents, Judd-305, Pollock-370, R.4, PR65 Brown
NGC. Design. Obverse: Portrait of Washington facing right with GOD AND OUR COUNTRY around and the date and two stars below. Reverse: The denomination 2 CENTS centered in a wheat wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The word CENTS is curved dramatically. Struck in copper with a plain edge.
Commentary. According to an entry in George Eckfeldt's journal, Judd-305 was struck in late 1863 (Eckfeldt journal courtesy of Alan Meghrig and USPatterns.com). This circumstance establishes Judd-305 as the earliest appearance of Washington's image on a U.S. Mint pattern.
Physical Description. Strongly impressed devices complement the pristine surfaces. The reflective fields are beautifully toned in iridescent shades of lavender, blue, and gray. An attractive example of this popular pattern. NGC Census: 4 in PR65 Brown, 7 finer. PCGS Population: 4 in PR65 Brown, 7 finer (12/08).
